Once your phone is in Airplane mode, open the Mail app and Go to the Outbox. Step -3 Click the “Edit”. Referencing email being saved in outbox, then deleted if it does not reach the recipient, I don’t see that happening. I use either the Gmail app or the iOS Mail app. My emails (gmails) are saved by default in Drafts if not sent; once they are sent, they are saved by default in Sent Mail folder, not in an Outbox. Restart Mail app. Delete the particular Outbox emails that are causing problems; Quit/close Mail app. Restart your Mac Computer. Open the Mail app and add your email account(s) back. Solution 2: Turn off the Cellular data. Turn off Wifi cellular data for mail. Then turn off the phone. It will have a red exclamation in email.

- Here, we have noted the most common reasons due to which emails get stuck in Outlook Outbox. Emails get stuck due to large attachments that halt or slows down the sending. The email is marked as viewed in the Outbox due to an installed add-in. The Outlook account is not authenticated by the mail server. The mail server or Outlook becomes offline.
These days, messages are sent as soon as you ... err... send them, so there's no longer a need for this limbo.

Isn't it more likely that many people assume their message has been sent, unless the Outbox appears?
Some people travel a lot, and find that the internet is actually not always available everywhere. In fact, it turns out that there are quite a lot of places where it's not. Furthermore, some people have things like corporate email servers which require them to be connected to a VPN to send email when offsite, which they are often not, whether because of lack of an internet connection or other issues. The problem is compounded by the fact that when you are frequently offline, Mail seems to do a somewhat bad job at actually sending things when you do come back online. Or so one might suspect, but it's hard to verify and even harder to report bugs when the outbox isn't visible to _show_ that you've got waiting outbound messages.
There's also the case where you're using Mac Mail to access an Exchange server and your Exchange presence is down (this is the problem I had yesterday which left me looking for an Outbox to verify delivery... or the lack thereof... and is what prompted my solution... yes, I'm the author of the hint). In this case, I had full internet connectivity, but the mail server was having problems and I needed to see the contents of the Outbox to know when things were working again, etc.
I have a corporate account that used to be like this in the old days. No VPN, no mail going out or coming. With time the corp IT changed and now we do not suffer the 'Outbox' issue.
The only times I really want to check my Outbox is when the mail does not go and that happens when there are problems and Mail shows me the box.
It is a nice to have option to show the outbox. I believe that Mail should have a setting to enable or disable it.
Rather than creating the bogus SMTP server couldn't I just take my Mac offline (turn off Airport and/or ethernet) and try to send an email using an existing server in order to get the Outbox to show? (I would try this myself but I already tried your hint and haven't figured how to remove the Outbox icon yet.)
I was able to do this more simply by: disconnect from broadband, send e-mail to self, Outbox appears and can be dragged into Favourites bar.
Remember to reconnect!
I didn't have to set a bogus smtp server, just turn of Airport (WiFi) on your computer or disconnect any ethernet cable or turn off any other way that you use to connect to internet. Send an email and automatically it will be sent to the Outbox that will appear, then just move it to the favorites bar.
It's a lot easier this way.

This is not working for me. I get the message that the server is offline, but no offer to send it later and no appearance of an Out mailbox.
I am returning to report that this morning the Outbox appeared when I opened the mail app. So I too now have one permanently!

Outbound mail seems to be a bit unreliable, so it's great to be easily able to see if there is anything stuck in the outbox.
Yesterday, I tried to send an email on my iPhone. But it seemed that my email was stuck in my outbox. My email would not go. For some reasons, the iOS mail app could not reach the email server to send my mail. I wanted to delete it and resend again. but I could not delete the email because the “Edit” button was grayed out.

This short article explains how you can clear a stuck email in your outbox.
There may be many issues stopping the mail from being sent; such as:
- A bad connection
- Offline mail server
- Corrupt messages
- Too large file (videos, pictures etc) attachments for your email server to handle
- Wrong password for the email account
- Wrong email address
Also note that iPad, iPod touch and iPhone users may experience this problem. If you think that your email sending process takes too long on your iOS device, here is how you can troubleshoot:
How to clear stuck emails
1-Turn on Airplane mode (Settings > Airplane Mode)
2-Restart your iPhone or iPad by pressing and holding the on/off (sleep/wake) button until you see the red slider. Slide the read slider. Wait a few seconds. Then again press and hold the on/off button until the Apple logo appears.
3-Do not turn off Airplane Mode
4-Launch the Mail app
5-If you have more than one email accounts, select the one you are having problems with, e.g., iCloud, Gmail etc
6-Tab Outbox. Note if you do not see an Outbox, this means that your email was already sent successfully.

7-Now you can tap Edit as you will see this option is no longer grayed out or dim.
8-Select the stuck email message in the Outbox and then tap Trash

Now you can turn off Airplane mode. You may want to resent this email again.If your cannot send the email again, you may want to do the followings:
- Contact your email provider
- Make sure that your email account settings are correct
- Remove your email account and add again by going to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Your Email Account > Delete
